Welcome to Fremont NH a small town with a lot of history. In fact some of the early residents had a wee bit of a rebellious nature. Have you ever heard of the Mast Tree Riot?
Well, let me tell you a little bit about it. Fremont was Settled in the 1720s was originally part of the town of Exeter. The area was once famous for its heavy growth of eastern white pine trees, which was reserved for use as masts for the the Royal Navy.
Eventually residents began to use the wood for their own needs, building homes with it. In 1734 a surveyor-general, was sent to the Mill to inspect the lumber, local citizens realizing this wasn’t going to be a good thing took matters into their own hands and gathered together and actually as the town history reports …. “discharged firearms”, which convinced the surveyor to leave.
However he came back with a small group of men and unfortunately for them, they were attacked by citizens disguised as Indians. This revolt would become known as the Mast Tree Riot.
Modern Day Fremont
Modern day Fremont has a state of the art town library, a modern safety complex, popular restaurant, 2 town markets and an awesome ice cream stand. It is a small rural community with a rich history that still has much unspoiled countryside. Fremont also has part of the Rockingham County recreational trail system running through it which is popular for the outdoor lovers and of course the very scenic Exeter river, 40 mile +/- stretch of river that winds it’s way down to tidal Great Bay. An active ball field and beautiful countryside to enjoy including the North Road Farm which is a private horseback riding academy, camp and also a 4H club for dedicated children, adults and people with disabilities.
