Kingston New Hampshire A Special Place

I just love discovering local talent and posting about it.

We all live in communities that are special to us or at least they should be special if you call them your home. Sometimes it takes going out and exploring your community to discover what makes it special or maybe getting involved in town events. If you look you’ll find it!

Kingston NH, while not my home town is a town I like very much. I’ve written about Kingston and I also did a virtual tour of Kingston last fall that you can see by clicking on the take the tour tab.

Kingston is a lovely small NH town rich in history and rich in people…after all it is not the towns themselves that make a community a special place, but the people that make a community special.

Last week I discovered a very talented local artist who calls Kingston her home. When I say talented I really mean it. Let me tell you about Kathy Radford, Kingston, New Hampshire’s hidden local talent.

Kathy has lived in Kingston since 1970. Prior to moving to Kingston, Kathy and her husband would vacation in NH and always stopped off in Kingston.

I asked Kathy what made Kingston so special to her and she told me and I quote that they” fell in love with the warm country charm of the town with the town plains dotted with all the historic homes and the wonderful old Church on the Plains, the Town Hall, the bandstand and the majestic old Sanborn Seminary. Plus Kingston’s proximity between Boston and the White Mountains with the added bonus of the Seacoast area thrown in, made for the perfect spot to raise three children in a relaxed friendly community where everyone was your friend.”

Kathy shared with me so many nice things about Kingston and its history that I believe anyone thinking of making Kingston their home should hear Kathy’s words. Because they are so touching I really feel a second post needs to be written… stay tuned for an insider’s peek into Why Kingston NH is so special. Meanwhile enjoy Kathy Radford’s Art…she is one special lady!

Kathy has been taking photos since she was 8 years old. Her Grandmother bought her, her first camera a Brownie camera (I have no clue what that is) and Kathy has been a shutterbug ever since.

Kathy started selling her photographs about 2 1/2 years ago after a close friend who saw her photo album encouraged her to go public with her work. Boy am I glad she did!

Kathy took oil painting lessons for many years and she used to take pictures with the idea that she might do oil paintings from her photos.

After awhile she stopped painting but continued to take photographs for her personal enjoyment. She has taken many photographs throughout New Hampshire and Kathy like many of us is using a digital camera…hers is a Konica Minolta. Just like me she a draw full of undeveloped rolls of film. Someday someone will develop them and find a true treasure.

You can see some of Kathy’s work at the Kingston Days in August in the Art and Antique section or in July and August in Manchester Artists Association Art Gallery at 1528 Elm Street Manchester NH.

All the photographs used in this post belong to Kathy Radford and are copyrighted.

Four of the photos I have included in this post were picked as Artist of the Month this past year at the Manchester Artists Association.

1. The white barn in the snow, taken on Rte. 111 in Kingston near the Exeter line.

2. Cardinal on Ice taken on a bush in Kathy’s back yard this past winter during an ice storm. 3. Broken window of an old barn on Rte. 16 in Ossipee, the house and barn were vacant and up for sale and 4. Milkweed Pods blowing in the wind were taken at the same place, they were in the field out behind the barn.

I absolutely love the Milkweed pods!

Jay and I are a bunch of shutterbugs ourselves so I can relate to Kathy’s love of photography and admire the talent she has for seeing the beauty around us.

Kingston New Hampshire is one lucky town!

Like a Rock…The Patriot Guard Riders

Sometimes you just need a shove, this is a post that is long overdue. I think fear kept me from writing this…fear of not being able to do the subject justice. Fear of feeling uncomfortable…fear of failure. I dunno maybe a little of both.

Then I saw this video and knew that the right time is right now. Do me a favor and let it play while you read this.

Back in April I wrote a blog post about Hate, some of you may recall it. The NH Blog post itself took on a life of it’s own and exposed me to a whole world that I had no clue existed. The Patriot Guard Riders.

I found out that my little town of Hampstead NH had members that belonged to the Patriot Guard Riders and one of them a woman even documents and takes photographs of the mission rides. This is not a group of guys and gals who are out simply to have fun and ride wildly on their motorcycles.

These are people from all walks of life, many who volunteer their time and take days off from work -unpaid to Stand Tall and be a Rock when we need them.

Some of them may look a little on the wild side but all of them care deeply about doing the right thing…honoring our fallen heroes and protecting their families from further pain.

I didn’t know it then but they act as a human shield during funerals protecting the families from the evil of the protesters. I learned that in my town of Hampstead New Hampshire there were people who were going to make sure that the family of our fallen hero and the mourners were not to be touched by the evil of the protesters. They would be shielded from the ugly reality of this hate.

I learned that day that the Freedom a local boy had fought and died to preserve gave someone else the right to protest and spew hateful things even while his funeral was being held a few feet away.

I watched as the protesters were protected…albeit with great distaste by local law officials. After all…They had a right!

He died so they could have the right to be heard and seen.

My god that tore me apart!

I learned that day what being Patriotic really meant and it was not just waving a flag on the 4th of July or planting flowers on Veterans day.

It is something much deeper and more powerful than can be imagined.

It is the core of some people, it is unshakable…strong and quiet like a Rock.

It makes them stand in the rain, snow and wind enduring the elements while tightly holding a flag. Solid steady like a Rock for hours protecting people that in many cases they don’t even know. They stand there listening to hate filled protesters who carry ugly messages on signs…they listen and look and remain calm like a Rock.

I wrote that day… feeling all the raw emotion of a life shattered and a new awareness of just how ugly people can be. I wrote about a man who came out of nowhere and held a flag…I called him gruffy.

I wrote about how his actions changed the mood of the day on my little street corner. How he rallied the crowd and showed them how to stare the bad guys down.

I’ve learned so much since then about the group of bikers that showed up on that rainy day. Many of them Viet Nam vets, some who came from far away and some from the next street over. Many of them did not know Captain Grassbaugh and that didn’t matter…they were on a mission!

I watched from the safety of my window inside my real estate office as they rode by on the way to church.

They had flags on their bikes…they were called the Patriot Guard Riders, and they showed me the true meaning of word Patriotic!

Like a Rock they stood together holding their flags…OUR flag proudly.

A group of Bikers, that name alone might make some shutter but really they are your neighbors and I found out that some of them are mine.

They are no different than most folks but when the going gets tough and someone needs to be a Rock..shielding grieving families, rain or shine they band together and do it quietly without fan fare…without pay.

I had never heard of them. Have you?

They say on their webs site that Freedom isn’t Free but their membership is.

You don’t need to ride a bike to be PGR member. Please take a moment and visit their website it will change your attitude…perhaps forever about Bikers.

A little History about the Patriot Guard Riders

It all started back in early August of 2005 when a group of American Legion Riders from Kansas heard that a “fallen hero’s memory was being tarnished by misguided religious zealots who were protesting at funerals” and they decided to do something about it.

The Patriot Guard Riders were born.

They came from all walks of life…male, female, long hair, short hair, clean shaven, a weekend stubble or full grown beard, some wore denim and chaps others polyester…no matter what they looked liked…they had one thing in common. They were Patriotic and they cared deeply.

I’d like to say that the rest is history but I know firsthand that the PGR is still relatively unknown and while what they do is so greatly appreciated…the word still needs to be spread.

I think what they have accomplished in a few short years is remarkable.

Currently the PGR memberships stands over 100,000 members strong and from reading a message by Jeff Lockhart on their website I get the feeling that they think the battle has just begun. They still feel helpless…

The statement below are the words of Jeff Lockhart, taken from the PGR website with his permission.

“100,000 strong… and still feeling helpless…”

“The statement above is what I would really like to title this collection of thoughts. Why? Because it’s the first phrase that comes to mind that truly describes who we are – and what we are.

You see, the PGR was founded with the idea of helping the family of a fallen soldier – a hero. Help them get through their grief in peace and surround them with the love and support of a nation that cares about them – and the memory of a hero. The PGR started by focusing on soldiers who were killed in action – but it wasn’t enough. Our membership saw the need to show a veteran who had passed that the PGR cared and loved them as well. In the same vein, the PGR took on the services of first responders – police, and firefighters. Finally… we were doing all we could.

Wrong. Help On the Homefront was established to deliver aid and assistance to troops and their families who were experiencing hardships due to injuries received. Now we’re good to go. Nope. The Fallen Warrior Scholarship fund was created for children of fallen heroes to pursue their dreams of higher education.

Is it ever enough? No… it isn’t. Thus you see the logic of my statement “100,000 strong… and still feeling helpless…”

The PGR rapidly grew in membership because it made sense – it was logical – it was sincere. To this day, these same values drive our mission and our efforts. What makes the PGR such a beautiful organization is the over 100,000 members who all share the same sentiment and ask the same question: “What else can I do?”

What else can I do? What else can I do to honor a man or woman who committed all that they are in this world to serve this country? What else can I do to preserve the honor and memory of a soldier who paid the ultimate price and gave the last full measure of themselves? What else can I do to make sure that they all know I care – it matters… they matter… they truly are special people… heroes to me. ” Jeff Lockhart 2007

I personally know that the PGR do good deeds, so many of them and yet they ask what else can I do? For me that rainy day in April they made a big difference. I’m sure that they made a difference for the family of Captain Grassbaugh and all the other fallen heroes they have protected. What a mission…may god bless them all!

Like a Rock…Jeff’s words can be thrown right back at them…they truly are special people… heroes to me. Patriot Guard Riders…like A Rock!

Moon rise over the Ocean

Full Moon Rising over Wells BeachHave you ever seen the moon rise over the ocean? Sometimes I think we forget just how incredibly beautiful our little part of world is. Last Monday we drove up to Wells Maine to meet up with our friends Bill and Nada Marth. They were on their way home from Bar Harbor Maine and decided on an overnight in Wells. We made plans to have dinner at Billy’s Chowder House, a favorite of theirs. Timing is everything… when we finished dinner we noticed the moon rising over by the beach. It was AWESOME to see so we drove over and took some photos of it. I can honestly tell you I have never seen a sight like it. My camera does not do well in low light but my pictures came out okay. Nothing compares to the real deal!!!Moon Rise over Wells Beach Maine

Rockingham County Market Trends- New Hampshire

Hampton Beach NH copyright monika mcgillicuddyMy husband Jay recently pulled together the real estate market report for our area, Rockingham County. I think it is well worth sharing with you all.

Jay and I have been selling real estate in Rockingham County since 1984 and we’ve seen lots of changes to the area as well as the market during those years. Everything has it’s cycles and I think the market will go up again…albeit in a few years. I wish I had a crystal ball but I don’t…maybe 3-4 years is my guess.

Rockingham County New Hampshire Sales Data Jan 1 through July 31

Rockingham County is located in the southeastern corner of the state. It reaches from Portsmouth on the coast to inland as far west as Londonderry.

Rockingham County The nice thing about this county is it’s rich in history as it dates back to when people moved north from Plymouth, MA back in 1623. The government was linked with Massachusetts until 1679 but counties weren’t introduced until 1769. The county seat is the town of Exeter and our Registry of Deeds is now located on route 125 in Brentwood.

Along the coast we have the shortest coastline in the country just about 19 miles worth of driving is all you can do. Not much but we do have a great sandy beach in Seabrook and Hampton along with some rocky beaches in North Hampton and Rye.

Drive along the coast and view some beautiful scenery and glance at some exquisite real estate as you wind up and down the coast.

Real Estate along the cost is not for everyone’s pocketbook but you may be just surprised to pick up a nice fixer upper for a pretty penny.

Real Estate sales have exploded in Rockingham County over the past 10 years as more a more people moved up from Massachusetts as they once did back in 1623.

The following chart represents the sales data for Rockingham County from January 1st through the end of July this year.

Linekin Bay Maine Kayaking trip

So far this year we have not kayaked near as much as would have liked but recently while in Boothbay Harbor Maine we went out on Linekin Bay.

Linekin BayJay and I set out at about 10:30 in the morning with a goal of reaching Ocean Point and then paddling back to our put in at the Murray Hill boat launch in East Boothbay.

High tide was at 1:31 pm and we knew we’d be able to get in a few hours of easy paddling.

Neither one of us had dipped our paddle in water since last summer! I think we’re classic fair weather paddlers.

This was our shake out paddle….working the kinks out so to speak.

When we put our kayaks in at the public boat launch at Murray Hill the water was like glass.

We glided along in the water marveling at the scenery…the lovely homes, sail boats and nature all around us.

I was trying to get used to being in my boat, a 17 foot long by 22 inches wide red Boreal Designs Ellesmere Kevlar kayak. A long narrow kayak like that requires good balance and quick hip movements.

I wanted to take pictures of everything but was limited as I knew the water temperature was about 55 degrees and I still needed to gain my confidence. Balancing a sea kayak and a camera can be tricky!

Jay and I paddled towards Ocean Point staying close to the shore and each other.

It was lovely and at one point we stopped at Spruce Shores to stretch and have a snack!

Once we reached Ocean Point the waves picked up as we were no longer protected by the bay but out in the open ocean. We stayed long enough to drink in the view and turned our boats back.

Our return leg gave us the afternoon winds at our back which pushed us along at a faster clip. It took us a couple hours to kayak out and just one hour to get back!

It was a beautiful sunny day in Boothbay Maine Linekin Bay mapone to remember and cherish!

Enjoy our virtual tour by clicking on the buoy below and remember I was sitting in my kayak while taking most of these pictures. Jay took a few too!

We love visiting the coast of Maine and hope you enjoy our tour.
