Bobbie Mabry Needs our help

Coffee House Comes to Aid of Ailing, Elderly Artist

Plans Silent Auction to Raise Funds, Save Life’s Work

January 4, 2012 Hampstead, NH – BeanTowne Coffee House will hold a silent auction of the work of Local Artist Bobbie Mabry, 82, of Raymond, NH, on Saturday, January 14th from 4-8pm. All proceeds will be used to defray her mounting medical costs and living expenses. At Bobbie’s insistence, 10% of the proceeds will be donated to “The Smile Train”, an organization that aids children with Clef Palletes.

Now battling Parkinson’s Disease, this former New Hampshire Art Association and Copley Society Member subsists on her dwindling savings, deliveries from Meals on Wheels, and the occasional good deed of a care worker. She now lives amongst her life’s work, a dust-covered collection of over 100 paintings and drawings created in different mediums; A collection that will surely be lost if her story continues on its current path.

Kate LeBlanc, a BeanTowne Coffee House employee, became aware of Bobbie’s situation and immediately asked to meet her. Seeing the conditions and situation in which this former accomplished artist was living, Kate asked what she could do to help get her the services she needed, and keep her in her own home. Together, they decided that the most viable option was to begin selling Bobbie’s collection. A decision that the artist is not only at peace with, but also extremely happy to have come to “I always wanted my work to be enjoyed, to be shared, and to bring a stranger to another place that once existed only in my mind”, she said. “After all these years, I know it’s time for them to see the light of day again. I hope the people who end up with them on their walls will enjoy looking at them as much as I did creating them.”

A small portion of her work now hangs for sale on BeanTowne’s wall, with one large piece having already sold for $600. That sale sparked an idea amongst the staff; “Why not have a silent auction and exhibit the rest of the collection?”

“This is truly a fulfillment of the highest aspiration of our business,” said Ed Goyette, owner. “We hope to raise enough money through the sale of Bobbie’s work to enable her to remain in her home and create a more comfortable life for her going forward. Any help toward that end will be greatly appreciated.”

The silent auction will feature free food and drink from BeanTowne and other local restaurants.

BeanTowne Coffee House is a purveyor of award winning coffee, espresso and sandwiches. The store located at 201 Route 111 in Hampstead, NH. www.beantownecoffee.com

Winter in New Hampshire Some How To Tips

Winter in NHWinter in New Hampshire ~ Some How To Tips

While I hate talking about winter it is a fact of life for those of us that live in the “colder” states and everyone in New Hampshire knows that winter can be pretty tough at times. That said being prepared for some of the storms and weather conditions like Blizzards, Ice Storms, Ice Dams, Wind Storms, Freezing Rain and Nor’Easters is a smart thing to do.

Prepare for the worse case

Preparing for the “worse” case is always a good thing. When I hear of a potentially big storm coming our way I start making ice and filling water jugs like crazy. This serves multiple purposes, I can melt some of the ice for drinking water, boil it for cooking, use it in a cooler and a freezer full of ice helps keep it colder and frozen much longer than one without and if the storm fizzles out I can just dump it out.  I also, right before the storm hits, fill my bath tub up with water. We have a well so when the power goes out so does my running water but I can use the tub water for flushing, some household cleaning and then simply drain it when the storm is over. I also make a couple of big pots of home made soup, usually chicken and a 16 bean soup and if we don’t eat it all during the storm I simply freeze it.

Storm shopping list

Aside from non perishable food and water I stock up on batteries, candles and alternate heating fuel items like wood, pellets, coal, propane or gas for generators. I also buy or gather things I would use if going on a wilderness camping trip… battery powered lanterns, radio, small propane canisters for a small propane stove, wet wipes (plenty of them) and dry shampoo. That way I can wash up even without running water.

Winter Storm Preparedness

I always make sure we have plenty of warm clothes, have extra blankets available, that our BBQ grill is in it’s “winter” position right by the back door and that our shovels are ready to be used. Ice Melt or Rock Salt is also great to stock up on. Of course making sure all the yard stuff is stored and put away is always a good thing especially when the wind kicks up.  Knowing where the Emergency Shelters are in your town and having a small over night bag prepared in case you have to leave your home is also highly recommended.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA has some good tips on their website as well. So take the time and get yourself and your family prepared for a “worse” case storm!

Hopefully none of this will be needed and we’ll have a mild winter but…. just in case!
