What should I look for in a good real estate agent?

October 21st, 2008 <-- Monika McGillicuddy --> · No Comments

A recent question posed via e-mail asked “What should I look for in a good real estate agent?” and of course my immediate answer was…Look no further you have found me! Then I thought about it and realized that the question deserved a real answer. So, if I was looking to buy a home somewhere where I knew nothing about the area… what would I do or better yet what would I look for in an agent?

# 1- I would look for an agent that is a REALTOR because I know that they would have to abide by a strict code of ethics and I know that not all agents are REALTORS.

# 2- Internet presence. I would Google their name and see what I could find out about them and the firm they worked for.

# 3- I would contact the licensing authority to see if there had been any disciplinary action taken against the agent.

# 4- I would contact the local board of REALTORS to make sure they are indeed a REALTOR in good standing.

# 5- Experience matters. I would want a buyer agent, someone who would represent me in the transaction.

# 6- I don’t care about someone being a Top Producer. I’d rather work with someone who makes me feel important to them. If they are too busy telling me about all the awards they’ve received and how many homes they’ve sold then I know it’s all about them and not really about me or worse yet that I am nothing but a dollar sign to them.

Lastly, there are many agents to choose from, I know this first hand but if you don’t feel right about the agent and if they do not go over an Agency Disclosure with you from the get go…walk away. In New Hampshire a REALTOR must give the consumer an agency disclosure upon first business meeting. You need to know who that agent represents BEFORE you spill your guts to them. There are many good ethical agents out there but there are many bad ones as well. Don’t risk it…

Of course you can save yourself a lot of grief and just call us :)

Penn State beats Michigan Oct 18 2008

October 19th, 2008 <-- Monika McGillicuddy --> · 9 Comments

A wild and wacky weekend at Happy Valley!

We drove down to Penn State, an eight hour ride, to spend the weekend with friends and attend the Penn State- Michigan football game. The game was highly anticipated as Michigan has whooped Penn State the last nine times they’ve met. The tailgating was awesome with over 1100 camping units and god knows how many cars parked all over the place. I must say that the fans were all just great…I saw Michigan and Penn State fans party side by side with a lot of good natured ribbing of course.

Santa and Toys for Tots and a Pumpkin contest were just two of the incredible tailgating set-ups that we saw…and the food- oh my god! The food was something else and of course the drinking was pretty intense too. We had a great time albeit way too short. We left New Hampshire on Friday morning and returned on Sunday afternoon. Talk about a marathon trip!

WARNING*WARNING*WARNING

Columbus day weekend brought perfect weather and perfect fall foliage

To take advantage of it we took a ride up north with friends, Liz and Brad Yasika and we had a great day. New Hampshire the beautiful is an understatement. Enjoy the slide show and see just how pretty New Hampshire can be in the fall.

Wolfeboro NH and Lake Winnipesaukee

October 16th, 2008 <-- Monika McGillicuddy --> · 5 Comments

This past weekend we went on a New Hampshire road trip

The fall colors were magnificent and we had an invite to spend the weekend with our good friends Liz and Brad Yasika. The plan was to take a leisurely boat ride around lake Winnipesaukee with a few stops to check out some of the homes that Brad and Liz were building on the lake. Brad and Liz own and operate Craft Master Woodworking and build custom homes all along the lake. Being real estate agents, Jay and I are naturally very interested and are always amazed when we see the detail and quality construction that is the signature of Craft Master Woodworking. Check out our photos and if you live in Wolfeboro or anywhere on Lake Winnipesaukee or any other lake for that matter and need a contractor/builder who will treat your home like his home…check out Craft Master Woodworking at 603-365-5352 and be sure to tell them Jay and Monika sent you.
