MEME- It shouldn’t be about ME, but today it is…

I got tagged to write a meme by Blog by the Bay’s… Ginger Wilcox. Are you wondering what in the world a meme is? Well basically, in the blog world, a meme is a question that is asked on one blog and answered on another.
SO in this meme chain, Ginger tagged me and asked me to (1) list 7 things about myself, (2) tag 7 people to do the meme on themselves including a link to their site. It is all in the name of good fun, and probably helps with “transparency” too. So here are 7 random things, all about ME! After all, why else would it be called a Meme.

Monika Mcgillicuddy1. I arrived in the United States when I was 5 years old, after a week and half at sea. I don’t remember much of the trip except the killing of a whale, which was very gross, and when leaving the big ship being in a huge scary hallway. I remember walking along the hallway with what seemed like thousands of other people. I was afraid because I could hear crying up ahead. As we got closer to the end of the line I could see a nurse who had this god awful huge shiny needle. I knew it was meant for me and I tried to escape. No luck … before I could even push at the woman, the huge needle was stuck in my arm! Man did it hurt and I cried, screamed is probably more like it. Welcome to the United States of America.

2. We lived in an apartment house in Everett Massachusetts until 1965 and I loved it there. I had a best friend named Linda Williams and we would spend hours playing with our dolls together. One day my dad bought a piece of land in NH and for a very long time our weekends were spent up in NH, clearing the land, piling up rocks and brush while slowly meticulously my dad built us a house.

3. We finally moved to Salem New Hampshire. It took forever to build the house as it was all done in my dad’s spare time, he already had two jobs. Finally moving day came and it was traumatic! I did not want to leave my best friend. The year we moved to Salem was hard on me. I was 11 years old and didn’t want to leave everything I knew behind. It was hard making friends in the new town. That year was also the year my cousin Ricky (Richard Mahler) died while I was baby sitting him. He was 4 years old and it was probably the worst thing that could have happened to me at that point in my life. How selfish that sounds today. Our family

4. I grew up, survived the sixties, got married at 18 (divorced years later) and became a mom to two boys Marty and Michael. In 1984, I became a Real Estate Agent and a year later a Real Estate Broker. I became a citizen in 1986 and was proudly sworn in during a huge ceremony held in Concord NH. The day before the ceremony I got a traffic ticket and was worried that because of it they wouldn’t let me become a citizen. I was so worried about it that I didn’t sleep the night before my swearing in ceremony. Until the last minute I thought I’d be pulled out of line and sent home…still an immigrant!

5. One day I met Jay and knew he was my soul mate. We eventually married and worked together at his family owned real estate firm, Hampstead Associates dba Stage Road Realty. In 1997 we merged our firm with a local Century 21 office and in 2005 we left Century 21 to join Prudential Verani Realty. Real estate was our life and still is.

6. We bare-bAt Seaoated the Virgin Islands for 10 days on our honeymoon. It was by far the best trip we’ve ever taken. We rented a 44 foot sailboat with an other couple…no crew just the 4 of us. We had some close calls, met some wacky people and to this day argue about which one of us took this picture. It was me of course.

7. We now own a 40 foot motor home, a diesel pusher, it’s pretty luxurious for camping but we love it. I wish we could take more time to travel the country with it but right now we’re saving our pennies to take a trip to Germany.sailing For me it would be going back home but for Jay it would be discovering his roots with his newly found birth family. Hopefully we can pull off a trip soon.

That’s it for me …now I need to tag 7 other “Lucky” people.

    Hi Lisa,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I had no choice about the boat to the States but our bare-boating experience was exciting. I would do that again in a heart beat even though I am now more aware of modern day pirates.

  2. Hey Moni,
Another great meme. You’ve had one interesting and exciting life. That’s pretty brave going out on that boat. I love living vicariously through you. You do all the things I’m just plain scared to do!

  3. moni says:

I loved it! Sabine your life is very interesting…A Harley, how very cool! You’ll have to post a picture of it. That helicopter ride sounded awesome and you can tell that you love your family very much. Thanks for being such a good sport and writing your meme.

  4. Monika,

Goodness, this was hard work. My life is just not that interesting! Seven things about me??? Phew…
    Well…you asked for it…It’s done…:-)
    Sabine
PS: Sorry for tracking instead of linking – I’m having some ‘puter problems…

    Midori,
Thanks so much! I felt for that whale…I think that scared me big time.
I was hesitant doing the meme on my outside blog…but that is what this meme chain is all about. LOL…so I had no choice.

Carole…Thanks for the Tinyurl link….very cool! I noticed that on twitter but was clueless about it. I’m going to have to try it out.

  6. Carole Cohen says:

Hi Sailor! I started using tiny urls because of Twitter’s 140 character limit. You go to http://www.tinyurl.com and paste in the entire http code and it gives you a shorter version to use!

    Monika-What a great meme…poor whale..I did learn something new…I didn’t realize you were a former Century 21 associate…
I had to laugh when you were talking about your traffic ticket…I imagine it wasn’t funny at the time but its got to be funny to you now…great idea…on your outside blog…I love it!

  8. Carole…I love your meme!!! Thanks for the link…it makes it easy for everyone to find. How did you make the link in that “tiny URL” …that’s a new one for me.

Sabine…Please do a meme…it’s a neat way to get to know everyone. Just post a link here when you have it done.

  9. Monika,

Sounds like an amazing life so far! But as for your tag – I’m going to have to think! :-)
    Give me a few….Please!
    Sabine

  10. Carole Cohen says:

Now I can read everyone else’s meme!

  12. JudyT…Get to it lady…I love reading them. I think I might use this Meme as my homework assignment for school on Wednesday…did ya notice any typos?

  13. judy t says:

Moni, You sly dog you:) I loved this post. I learned a lot about your childhood and what it was like for you coming here from Germany. I am procrastinating about writing my 2nd meme. I was tagged the other day.

  14. moni says:

Thanks Ann. Let me know when you have it done. The Meme’s are fun…like you, I thought Oh No..not another meme!!! But I did one.

  15. Ann Cummings says:

Monika!! ANOTHER meme?? I guess I will have to recycle just a bit, but I’ll reformat it for this one.

As much as I’ve known about you, I still learned some new stuff in this meme. I enjoyed reading this one – I like reading these memes and learning new things about people you’ve known for awhile (years for us!).

I’ll have to take a day or so to get mine done, but I will get it done!

  16. Germany…I guess I forgot to mention that.
    Thanks for stopping by Missy.

  17. Missy Caulk says:

Which country were you from Monika?

  18. moni says:

You’re a sweetie thats why you cried!!! I’d love to go back to the islands…it was an amazing trip.
